So our main reason was to have the gem cookie represent the “Hawkers” as like the cookies, there are many types of hawkers and no 2 are ever the same. They all come from different backgrounds, have different reasons for being hawkers, and most importantly, sell different types of food.
In a more symbolic form, the gem cookies also represents the love people have for hawkers. In Singapore, everyone likely has some kind of memories of these gem cookies, and likely have fond memories of them, be it a moment that relates to it or a maybe just nostalgia. That is what we want to do with the project of hawkers, as we want people to have that same feeling when they eat these hawkers food or when they hear their stories, maybe the food tastes like nostalgia or maybe their story hits close to home and soon the consumer forms a connection with the Hawker and their food.
